Trash

Deleted photos wait in the trash for 30 days, where you can restore them. They count toward your storage until the trash is emptied.

Deleting a photo moves it to the trash rather than removing it. It stays there for 30 days, and you can put it back at any time in those 30 days; after that it is deleted for good.

What goes to the trash

  • Photos you Delete — one at a time, or a whole selection.
  • The photos of a folder you delete, and of the folders inside it.
  • The photos you let go in Similar photos with Keep one, move … to trash.

A photo in the trash no longer appears in your albums, or through their links. Restore it and it is back in them; delete it for good and it leaves them.

Restore or delete for good

Click Trash at the bottom of the left column to see what is in it. Photos there have no heart and no ⋯ menu. Select them and the bar that appears has Delete Forever and Restore; open one and the bar above it has Restore and Delete forever:

  • Restore puts them back in their folder — or in Unfiled, if that folder is gone. Restoring always works, even when your storage is full.
  • Delete Forever removes them now. It asks first, and can't be undone.

Empty Trash in the toolbar deletes everything in the trash at once, after asking. On a wide screen the toolbar also reminds you that photos in the trash are deleted permanently after 30 days.

Storage

Photos in the trash still count toward your storage. If you are near your plan's limit, emptying the trash is the quickest way to make room.

A photo that is only in the trash counts as gone when you upload: the same file uploads again rather than being skipped as a duplicate.
